It is a skill that children need to master to succeed academically and socially. However, learning to write can be a difficult task for some children, particularly those with fine motor difficulties. One solution to this problem is to use a grooved triangular-shaped pencil. In this article, we will explore the benefits of using a grooved triangular-shaped pencil for children's writing skills. Ticonderoga brand is one of the most popular for school-aged children providing a variety of tools and writing instruments from wide pencils for small hands to triangular-shaped pencils to form functional efficient three- or four-finger pencil grasp allowing children to learn and practice handwriting without frustration.

Improved grip
One of the most significant benefits of using a grooved triangular-shaped pencil is that it helps children improve their grip. The grooves on the pencil provide a natural resting place for the fingers, which helps to develop a comfortable and stable grip. This, in turn, allows children to focus on forming letters and words, rather than struggling to hold the pencil correctly.

Increased control
When children have a comfortable and stable grip on the pencil, they can exert more control over their writing. This means that they can form letters and words more accurately, which is essential for developing good handwriting skills. Improved control also allows children to write for longer periods without experiencing fatigue.

Better posture
Using a grooved triangular-shaped pencil can also help to improve children's posture. The ergonomic design of the pencil encourages children to hold it correctly, which in turn encourages them to sit up straight and maintain good posture. This is important for preventing back pain and other posture-related problems.

Reduced hand fatigue
Writing can be tiring for children, particularly if they have to write for long periods. The grooves on a triangular-shaped pencil help to reduce hand fatigue by distributing the pressure evenly across the fingers. This means that children can write for longer periods without experiencing discomfort.

Increased confidence
When children can write more accurately and with less effort, they often feel more confident in their writing abilities. This can encourage them to write more frequently and to take pride in their work. Increased confidence can also lead to improved academic performance and a more positive attitude toward learning in general.

Versatility
A grooved triangular-shaped pencil is versatile and can be used for a wide range of writing tasks. This makes it an excellent choice for children who are just learning to write, as well as those who are more advanced. It can be used for writing, drawing, and coloring, which makes it a valuable tool for children of all ages.

In conclusion, using a grooved triangular-shaped pencil can be highly beneficial for children's writing skills. It can improve grip, control, and posture, reduce hand fatigue, increase confidence, and be versatile. These benefits can lead to better handwriting, improved academic performance, and a more positive attitude toward learning. Therefore, it is highly recommended that parents and teachers consider using a grooved triangular-shaped pencil to help children develop their writing skills.

"Neela's Reflection" is a beautiful and inspiring children's book that tells the story of a blue firefly named Neela, who struggles to find her place in the world. As the only blue firefly in the forest, Neela feels like she doesn't fit in with the other fireflies. She can't fly as fast or shine as bright as the others, and her dull, small reflection in the lake only reinforces her feelings of inadequacy. However, when a storm hits and another firefly needs her help, Neela discovers that she has a special talent that she never knew she had. Her blue light is the key to saving the day, and she learns to embrace her differences and find her shining light within. The story is told in verse, which adds to its charm and makes it a fun and engaging read for children. The illustrations in "Neela's Reflection" are absolutely stunning. They are full of vibrant colors and capture the beauty of the forest and its inhabitants. The illustrations bring the story to life, and children will love looking at the pictures as they read along with the story. What I love most about "Neela's Reflection" is its message of perseverance and determination. Neela's struggles are relatable to children who may feel like they don't fit in or have trouble finding their talents. The story shows that everyone has something special to offer, and it's important to keep trying and never give up. Overall, "Neela's Reflection" is a wonderful children's book that parents and children alike will enjoy reading. The story is heartwarming and inspiring, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. This book is a must-have for any child's bookshelf, and it's sure to become a beloved favorite.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13231743.post-90692058439940195652023-02-19T22:34:00.008-05:002023-02-20T20:19:07.534-05:00Occupational Therapy Centers for Children in Brooklyn, NY

If you are looking for centers with occupational therapy services including a sensory gym, here are some pre-school occupational therapy centers located in Brooklyn, NY that you may contact to find all the details. She's the principal investigator of the foundation's Simons Variation in Individuals Project, which characterizes behavior and brain structure and function in participants with genetic copy number variants such as those at 16p11.2, which are believed to play a role in spectrum disorders.
Chung also directs the clinical genetics program at Columbia University. In assessing and treating kids with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities, she uses advanced genomic diagnostics to explore the genetic basis of neurological conditions. She thinks deeply about the ethical and emotional questions around genetic medicine and genetic testing.

Before reading about SPD, please watch this video with child's point of view on sensory processing. Child is diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder)
Video: Sensory Processing Disorder by child's view on the problem

Sensory processing is the process of organizing sensations from environment and from body to develop and produce adaptive responses and to function efficiently.
Sensory integration is just a frame of references used by therapists to treat sensory processing dysfunction/disorder (SPD).

What senses/sensory systems are involved: vision, auditory, taste, smell, touch, vestibular (movement and had position), proprioceptive (sense of muscles and joints, tells about body, controls amount of force muscles should generate to protein task - you may see it when child had difficulties grading strength of pencil grip and pressure on pencil).

SPD has different types:
Sensory Modulation Disorder (SMD):
1. Sensory over-responsivity (hyperresponsivity/defensiveness). Could be aggressive avoiding stimuli like touch, sound (covering ears, avoiding crowded noisy places), texture
2. Sens. under-responsive (lethargic, slow)
Both types of disorders are sensory seeking, but seeking different types of stimuli. First is looking for stimuli to calm themselves down. Second - to increase arousal state.

Sensory modulation is directed to improve high level skill called self-regulation which involves other components (behavioral, cognitive, social emotional).
Working on sensory processing deficits requires family support and providing "sensory diet" activities. (See below link to resources).
After an assessment of a child (SPM sensory processing measure) plan school and home activities including sensory diet (sensory strategies, environmental modifications).

Sensory diet (Patricia Wilbarger) - repeated beneficial sensory input to modulate sensory system. There is positive feedback on benefits of using movement, deep pressure, weighed vests, discs, brushing protocol and other elements and activities of sensory diet (there is no evidence-based proven research, demonstrating positive effect. Effect must be monitored over long period of time and adjusted according to the child's needs and responses).

To be continued

References:
materials from online resources and autism workshops provided by different organizations were used in this article. Full list of references will be published later.

1. PLAY DOH, GAK, GLOP, FUNNY FOAM, etc...

Children need and love play doh and messy play, unless they have tactile defensiveness that is. There are so many versions of play doh, from pre-package to homemade, scented to unscented, textured to non-textured, cooked to uncooked. You name it, I have found a recipe for it. Check out Play Doh Recipes... here you will find dozens of fun recipes which make tactile experiences messy and fun!

Children need to touch a variety of textures and play with them to develop normal tactile processing. If your child will not play with messy items, it is even more important that you continue to find fun and creative ways to introduce these to them.

Check out the SPD Symptoms Checklist to find out if your child shows signs of tactile dysfunction.

You will also want to take a look at General Treatment Guidelines for helpful hints on how to introduce these materials to your child safely and effectively so they can learn how best to process this input.

Need modeling dough or accessories to use with it? Visit The Crayola Store for additional fun products to use!

2. HEAVY WORK ACTIVITIES:

These types of activities are imperative for children who have difficulty regulating their arousal levels. They are the crashers, the jumpers, the leg shakers, the ones that can't ever seem to sit still. Boy, can they try your patience as a parent, teacher or even therapist! Regular heavy input into their neurological systems WILL help calm them down.

The premise behind these activities is to help their bodies receive
regular input into their muscles and joints in the most appropriate ways so they can get the input they crave and settle their bodies down.

You will see and hear a lot about heavy work activities. Often these activities will include using weights, weighted products, jumping, bouncing, rocking, pushing, pulling, swinging and being "squished".

All kids need this! But, our children with under-reactive neurological systems will need it even more. These activities are truly used for most sensory processing issues and can have an amazing affect on the nervous system for regulation and modulation.

Hint: Always best to precede a sit down task with a heavy work activity.

Check out an extensive list of Heavy Work Activities I have compiled. Have fun trying them all! These activities should indeed be a big part of your daily sensory diet. Also, check out my Heavy Work Equipment And Activities Store for jumping, bouncing, moving and rocking products, as well as books for great game ideas!

Digging and playing in the sand is also a great way to give your body heavy input (as well as tactile experiences). Check out this e-book... How To Build Your Own Awesome Toy Backhoe.
